| "In Oxfordshire the surname Lamprey, from the eel-like creature chiefly known for having caused the death of Henry I, was quite a rare surname until after 1500, and was apparently that of a single family; subsequently it increased to become quite a common surname in the north and north west of the county. Several variant spellings of the name developed Lampery, Lanchepreye, Lansprey, etc. Though the name is generally rare, it does occur in other parts of England, as far as can be seen without any link to the Oxfordshire family. The meaning of this surname is difficult to unravel. It can hardly have been given to someone who was thought to look like a lamprey. Possibly the name may contain an allusion to the lamprey's habit of preying on fish by attaching itself to its victim by its mouth, but this is no more than a guess." |
